Smoothness: Sheffield
Definition
Smoothness is a measure of the roughness of the linerboard top sheet.
Influence
The smoothness of the linerboard surface influences how well the corrugated converter can print the surface.
Potential Problems
Rough linerboard surfaces may lead to printing definition problems and ink coverage problems. Increasing printing pressure to force ink into surface irregularities distorts rubber printing dies, affecting the precision of the image and causing ink squeeze-out. Excessive pressure also crushes the fluted structure of the combined board, reducing stacking strength. Smooth linerboard leads to high definition, glossy print jobs.
