In
today’s environmentally conscious times, it seems
evident that more and more companies are encouraged to
‘close the loop’ by making products that are
recyclable. However, Corrugated Services Inc., a Texas
based linerboard and medium manufacturer has been
making 100 percent recycled containerboard for nearly
30 years. In addition, the company owns scrap fiber
processing plants and manufactures a repulpable
coating as an alternative to wax-coated corrugated
containers.
Corrugated Services is ‘bullish’ about the quality of
recovered Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) used in its
finished product. “We wanted to have more control
over our scrap fiber, so in the 90’s we created a
separate division, Fiber Supply, for processing OCC,”
said Bill Baker, Corrugated Services’ Vice President
of Marketing. “Good quality fibers with a high
percentage of US produced boxes and no newspaper, are
essential in producing premium quality
containerboard.”
Fiber
Supply offers training on quality right at the source
of OCC, its suppliers. “We offer formal training to
managers and employees on the do’s and don’ts of
recycling OCC, so everyone is on the same page,” said
Marty Rusk, Vice President of Fiber Supply. “We go
over contaminant issues such as wax, plastic and other
types of papers that are not acceptable when baled
with the OCC.” Loose OCC and other paper grades are
sent to sort conveyors and the separated grades are
baled. All baled paper grades delivered to Fiber
Supply are thoroughly checked and inspected for
quality prior to shipping to our mill. “We avoid
suppliers who do not meet our quality requirements,”
said Rusk.
Seventy
percent of our scrap fiber is generated and sourced in
the Dallas / Ft Worth area from industrial accounts,
printers, office buildings and other recycling
facilities; ninety seven percent of incoming material
is generated within a 250 mile radius, noted Rusk.
The
division collects / purchases over 25,000 tons of OCC
per month, in addition to other paper grades. Fiber
Supply has three processing plants in
Texas: an
86,000 square foot facility in Arlington, and 30,000
square foot plants in both Garland and Dallas. All
three are open 24/7 for haulers to drop off material.
“We
recognize that we can give more opportunities to the
haulers by having multiple locations as opposed to the
large single plant that depends on the spoke and hub
method of transporting. It really cuts down on
traveling costs for haulers,” said Rusk.
Our
three Fiber Supply Recycling Facilities are currently
providing over twenty percent of the material used at
Corrugated Services’ linerboard and medium mill
located just outside Dallas. The remaining OCC and
other grades are brokered or sold to other paper mills
across the country. “We have plans in the future to
automate the sorting process at our plants.
Automation will further enhance our scrap fiber
collections, efficiency and quality,” said Rusk.
Ranges
of Recycled Linerboard
Corrugated
Services manufactures 100 percent recycled linerboard and
medium at it’s mill in Forney. Their customers use the
products to produce new corrugated boxes – thus closing
the recycling loop. The mill has two paper machines, a
200 tpd medium machine and a 700 tpd linerboard machine.
CSI manufactures linerboard in basis weights from 33# to
57# and medium in basis weights from 26# to 40#.
The company prides itself on the quality of
it’s finished linerboard. “We have a unique way of
preparing fibers [in the stock preparation process] for
the paper machine, to make a clean, strong and printable
sheet of linerboard,” said Baker. “The results are seen
daily in the premium quality boxes produced by our
customers. When both our liner and medium are used, the
boxes are 100% recycled and 100% recyclable.“
Corrugated Services’ motto is service,
service, service. “Seventy percent of our orders are
received produced and shipped within nine days. Our
customers can order paper weekly and confidently keep
their inventories low,” said Baker. CSI supplies
boxmakers and corrugators from North Carolina to
California.
